A Pitchd idea for your day
A city outing with room to slow down.
Leave a little space in your Melbourne plans. A visit to Melbourne Gardens can be a walk, a picnic or simply time spent looking at something other than a screen. General entry is free, making it a useful outing when you want to enjoy the city without adding another admission ticket to the day.
Make a small plan, then take your time
Pick one part of the Gardens to explore rather than trying to cover everything. Head towards the lake, follow a path that catches your interest and leave time to sit down. Coming with someone else? Each choose one place to stop, then put the map away between them.
Our suggestion is to leave around 60–90 minutes for a relaxed visit, with extra time if you bring lunch. That is a planning idea, not an official walking time or a promise about a particular route.
Bring lunch and keep it simple
A filled water bottle, something to eat and a picnic rug are enough to make an afternoon of it. Choose the part of the Gardens you want to visit and check the official map for a suitable entrance and facilities before you leave.
If you are visiting with children, let them choose a leaf shape or colour to look for along the paths. Keep the activity to looking and noticing, and leave plants as you find them.
Choose your entrance before you set off
The directions button uses Observatory Gate as one practical starting point, near the Visitor Centre. Another gate may suit your plans better. Open the official map if you are meeting friends, heading to a particular area or planning around access needs.
